The easiest and best way to store data such as dates is with enumeration types. This allows you to store such values as days, months and years. You can also use this concept to store other pertinent data such as numbers, calculations, etc… In using this technique for my transfer of data, I also decided to use these enumerations for public facing representation as well. It is very easy and low overhead to convert an enumeration type value to a string.
